The Vime Group is a new and dedicated to educating those who want to know more about video games and compiling a comprehensive list of video game words and information
Very few things have risen in popularity in such a relatively short time. The video game phenomenon is believed to have begun in 1962 with the creation of Spacewar!. Initially video games were largely restricted to restaurants and other places that housed arcade machines. In the 45 years since their birth, video games have evolved almost beyond recognition from the simpler days of Pac man. Today, the video game industry is a huge multi-billion dollar machine and a gamer sub-culture has sprung up around the machines, and like any sub-culture, they have created their own unique words and phrases.
Vime stands for the Video game language. While there are some universal Vime words that are used across all game types, generally Vime can be broken down according to genres. There is no conclusive list of the video game genres and sub-genres as these distinctions very subjective. There are some definite genres that are accepted as genres and these genres include: action, adventure, sports, puzzle, role-playing games (RPG), simulation, strategy, and driving. Additionally, action/adventure and simulation/strategy are particularly difficult to place, and often end up in multiple genres or their own mix. Games like Street Fighter and Tekken are traditionally called fighting games, but whether fighting is its own genre or merely a sub-genre of action is usually entirely in the hands of whoever happens to be writing at the time. First-Person Shooters (FPS) are also hard to classify, on the surface it appears to just be another action game, but a closer examination reveals some dramatic differences between FPSs and other common action games.
While there has always been words that were associated with video games, the recent birth of the Massively Multi-Player Online games (MMO), more specifically the Massively Multi-Player Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPG), such as Everquest and World of Warcraft, has sparked almost a cultural revolution. Thousands, even millions, of players are playing out their character’s lives in a shared interactive global community are creating new words, phrases, and abbreviations on a regular basis. Already, hundreds of Vime words exist, some actually spreading across the globe. If current trends hold true, then video games are not going anywhere anytime soon. Already we have possibly two generations who were born with video games well established, children are going to continue to play video games for the foreseeable future.
Currently the Vime Group, a group dedicated to finding, recording, and categorizing Vime words, is beginning to amass a large collection of these words and they are preparing to organize them for easy access to the public. If the Vime Group succeeds, it would be the premier place to turn to for answers to video game related questions. Parents, beginning gamers, or even old gamers who just want additional information can use the Vime resource to satisfy their needs. The Vime Group is always accepting new lists of video game words, phrases, advice, and game industry news. The Vime Group recently opened up their own Myspace webpage and are asking for submittals. Additionally, Vime has published a few small guides to some of the most basic information and words used in games. The Vime Group can also be reached by email at vimegroup@gmail.com
