This flight simulator brings the dog to the fight in a way that would not have ruined an NFL Football players career. Track down Charlie Brown's Dog's arch nemesis.
The Sony Playstation made a real airplane dogfighting game possible with the release of Snoopy vs. the Red Baron. Unlike Microsoft's Crimson Skies, the PSP, PS2 and PC title Snoopy vs. the Red Baron explores a whimsical fantasy of Charles Schulz's Peanuts universe.
In Snoopy vs. the Red Baron, the player must take control of Snoopy and his trusty Sopwith camel through high-flying adventures, but do not assume that the game took itself seriously. Snoopy's plane is equipped with many weapons that range from the silly to the bizarre.
The Atari 2600 had a cartridge with a Snoopy vs. the Red Baron title, but the hardware of the 2600 could not handle the complicated maneuvers or really make people feel like they were looking at the Peanuts Comic strip gang as envisioned by the late Charles Schulz. Regular readers of the Peanuts comic strip know that Snoopy's nemesis is Baron von Richtofen, also known as the Red Baron, the cat next door.
The designers of Snoopy vs. the Red Baron faced the challenge of designing a dogfighting game that was both challenging for seasoned gamers and friendly to the younger players. This design challenge resulted in a variety of interesting weapons that came from the Peanuts universe. These include a flaming boomerang, a potato machine gun, and a Woodstock guided bomb, according to IGN.
Other flying games give the player the capability to switch through a variety of aircraft as the game progresses. This would be possible, but would not capture the feel of Snoopy's fantasy of chasing down the Red Baron in his trusty Sopwith Camel. The graphics do a good job of mimicking the artistic style of Peanuts creator, Charles Schulz.
As a player plays through Snoopy vs. the Red Baron, he will work closely with Snoopy's best friend Woodstock and many other characters from the Peanuts universe will appear. The game was a unique idea, but sadly is only available for the Playstation 2, PSP, and the Personal Computer.
Those wishing for a whimsical flight game with unique weapons that can challenge even the serious gamer should consider picking up Snoopy vs. the Red Baron. Remember that the opponent is a sneaky feline German flying ace. Also remember that although Snoopy's Sopwith Camel may be faster, the Fokker D-1 flown by the Red Baron was more manueverable.
