Rock Band from Electronic Arts is one of the most popular music-and-rhythm games available for consoles today. Allowing gamers to rock out with a guitar, drums, or a microphone, the game has built quite a following among those who tire of Activision's even more popular Guitar Hero.
However, as noted in Suite101's preview of Rock Band, PlayStation 2 and Wii owners of Rock Band are missing out on a key feature included in the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Rock Band: downloadable content, which allows gamers to download songs not included in the retail version of Rock Band.
Thus, Electronic Arts, working with MTV, is preparing to release an answer to the problem with Rock Band Track Pack Volume 1. The game upgrade will include 20 songs in all that will also be made available for download on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
Rock Band Track Pack Volume 1's set list includes a variety of both current and classic artists, using only the original, master recordings:
Though PlayStation 2 and Wii owners will most likely be pleased by the announcement of Rock Band Track Pack Volume 1, there are still a couple questions gamers should be asking.
First, why are the songs in the track pack not being included in Rock Band for Wii, which doesn't ship until June 22nd in North America? And second, why isn't online being included in Rock Band Wii in the first place especially since Activision is proving downloadable content is possible on Wii with their upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour?
Nevertheless, Rock Band Track Pack Volume 1 does seem like it's better than nothing. Those gamers who like the looks of the song list should look out for the title when it releases on July 15th, 2008, in North America.
Gamers may also want to wait for Rock Band 2, which launches in September for the Xbox 360 and later in 2008 for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii; see Suite101's article about Rock Band 2's Song List for more information.
